Framing
A simple game with a ball that aims to have everyone involved and participating.
Instructions
- Clear the desks or tables away, and make sure anything breakable is put away.
- Have students stand in a circle.
- Tell the students that the object is to hit the beach ball into the air.
- Each time the ball is hit, it counts as a point.
- The ball cannot be hit by the same person twice in a row. If that happens or if the ball stops or touches the ground, they must start over.
- Throw the ball in the air for them to start. (Do not give them any planning time at first).
- After students have tried some rounds, adjusted their strategies, and had some success with this, stop the action, ask them to set a goal for how many points they would like to make.
- Make a few attempts.
Modify
- Adjust the goal to suit yet challenge the group’s skill level.
Safety
- If the goal is obviously too difficult, they might encounter some frustration. Stop the action and ask them to reassess.
Wrap-up
- What were the group goals? Did it help to set goals? Why or why not?
- What goal were you personally striving for? Were these individual goals compatible?
- What were some strategies you used to achieve your goals? Did you feel you were included in this activity? Why or why not?
- How did your strategy change over time? How did you make those decisions?
